Basketball Victoria has selected the Victorian 2021 Under-20 and Ivor Burge teams set to represent the state at the next Australian Junior Championships. These six teams will head to Mackay, Queensland from 3-7 May 2021 for the Australian Under-20 Junior Championships and Ivor Burge Championships for athletes with an intellectual disability.

The 2021 Under-20 and Ivor Burge Australian Junior Championship will be held from 10 – 14 February at a location to be confirmed by Basketball Australia. Burge produced the first standardised rulebook for the sport in October 1928, and founded the Victorian Basketball Association in 1931. He continued to help promote Basketball in Victoria through his position with the YMCA until 1940. In 1941, he became the inaugural Director if Physical Education at the University of Queensland.
Basketball Australia (BA) has today released the schedule for the 2021 Australian Under-20 and Ivor Burge Championships to take place 3-7 May at the McDonalds Mackay Multi-Sport Stadium in Queensland. The 2021 event is part of a two-year agreement between BA, Tourism and Events Queensland and Mackay Regional Council that will see the North Queensland city host these championships in both 2021 and 2022.
Widely recognised as one of the founding fathers of the sport of basketball in Australia, Ivor Burge is responsible for bringing the game to our shores in 1928 after returning from the birthplace of basketball, Springfield, Massachusetts (USA). Among his many achievements Burge was one of four representatives that came together in 1939 in Melbourne with the main objective of establishing a body to control the sport of basketball in Australia – Basketball Australia.

Heading to the Australian Institute of Sport, Canberra, from 5-9 February 2020, the best Victorian players will take on the rest of the nation in the first national competition of the new year.
In 1946 Burge was involved in the writing of the Constitution of Basketball Australia and founded the Queensland Amateur Basketball Association. He was appointed the Associations first President, a position he held until 1954.
